Vehicle fees explained
States rarely call the same charge by the same name. These are the fees that actually appear on registration bills — what each one is, how it is worked out, and whether you can deduct it.

Why the names matter
A registration bill is not one charge, and the labels are not decorative. California’s Vehicle License Fee, Arizona’s Vehicle License Tax, Colorado’s specific ownership tax and Nevada’s Governmental Services Tax are all doing the same job — taxing your car’s value — but each has its own rate, its own depreciation schedule and its own quirks. Meanwhile Georgia’s TAVT replaces sales tax altogether, Texas’ Standard Presumptive Value decides what your private purchase is taxed on, and Ohio’s permissive tax explains why your neighbour’s bill differs from yours.
Knowing which line is which is also how you know what is deductible: only the value-based charges generally qualify. Start with is vehicle registration tax-deductible if that is what brought you here.
