Every Arizona fee, explained
VLT β the whole ballgame
Arizona swaps big flat fees for a value-based Vehicle License Tax: assessed value = 60% of MSRP, reduced 16.25% per year of age; tax = $2.80 per $100 (new vehicles) or $2.89 per $100 (used/renewals). New $30,000 car: 60% β $18,000 β β$504. The same car at five years old: β$211. Deductible on federal taxes.
Flat fees: almost nothing
Registration $8, air-quality $1.50, title $4. (The $32 public-safety fee quoted in many older guides was repealed and is not on the current schedule.) Arizona's paperwork fees are among the lowest anywhere β VLT carries the load.
Private-party sales: no sales tax
Buy from a private seller and Arizona charges no transaction tax at all. Dealer sales pay TPT (~5.6% state + county). This makes AZ one of the best private-party used-car markets in the country.

Arizona fees and tax rates by county
Local charges are usually the reason two people in the same state pay different amounts. These are the rates the calculator applies β pick your county above to see them in your own estimate.
| County | Combined vehicle tax rate |
|---|---|
| Maricopa (Phoenix) | 6.3% |
| Pima (Tucson) | 6.1% |
| Pinal | 6.7% |
| Yavapai | 6.35% |
| Other Arizona county | 6.6% |
Rates shown are countywide. Individual cities and special districts can add a further increment β where that applies, the calculator notes it in the estimate.
Does registration get cheaper as the car ages in Arizona?
Yes β noticeably. Because Arizona bases part of the bill on vehicle value, the renewal falls every year. Here is the same car, renewed at five different ages, with a realistic market value at each point.
| Vehicle age | Approx. value | Renewal cost |
|---|---|---|
| Brand new | $35,000 | $616.40 |
| 3 years old | $24,500 | $307.48 |
| 5 years old | $19,250 | $173.72 |
| 8 years old | $12,250 | $70.89 |
| 12 years old | $7,000 | $26.76 |
That is a $589.64 swing between a new car and a twelve-year-old one β worth knowing before you buy, because it is a recurring annual cost rather than a one-off.
How Arizona compares with nearby states
The same purchase β a $25,000 four-year-old used car β registered in Arizona and in neighbouring states. Differences are driven mostly by whether the state taxes the purchase and how heavily.
| State | Agency fees | Tax | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arizona | $226.77 | $1,650 | $1,876.77 |
| California | $354.50 | $1,812.50 | $2,167 |
| Nevada | $297.75 | $1,712.50 | $2,010.25 |
| Colorado | $170.12 | $1,250 | $1,420.12 |
On this comparison Colorado is the cheapest at $1,420.12 and California the most expensive at $2,167 β a difference of $746.88 on an identical car. Registering where you actually live is a legal requirement, but the gap is worth knowing if you are moving.
Practical Arizona answers
How to lower your Arizona bill
Arizona's VLT drops 16.25% every year, so registration cost falls sharply as the car ages β one of the steepest declines in the country. The bigger point for buyers: private-party sales in Arizona are exempt from sales tax entirely, so buying from a private seller rather than a dealer can save thousands on the same vehicle.
Moving to Arizona?
New residents must register immediately upon establishing residency. Vehicles in the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas require an emissions test, and Arizona uses a Level I VIN inspection for vehicles arriving without a clean out-of-state title.
How to pay and renew
ADOT's ServiceArizona portal handles renewal online, and Arizona offers multi-year registration in some cases. Authorised third-party providers can complete transactions faster for an added fee.

Arizona DMV fee questions
What is Arizona VLT?
The Vehicle License Tax β an annual value-based tax that replaces high registration fees: 60% of the MSRP, reduced 16.25% for each year of age, taxed at $2.80/$100 (new) or $2.89/$100 (used/renewals). It's the dominant cost of registering in AZ, and it's federally tax-deductible.
How much does it cost to register a car in Arizona?
The flat fees are minimal β $8 registration, $1.50 air-quality, $4 title. Your real cost is the VLT, which depends on the vehicle's age and original value.
Is there sales tax on private-party car sales in Arizona?
No β casual sales between private parties are exempt from AZ transaction privilege tax. Dealer purchases pay about 5.6% state + county rates (~6.1%β6.7% total).
How fast does AZ VLT drop?
The assessed value falls 16.25% every year, so VLT roughly halves every four years β a car that cost $504 to register new costs about $211 in year five.
Is Arizona VLT tax-deductible?
Yes β because it's a value-based personal property tax, the VLT portion of your registration qualifies for the federal itemized deduction.
How much is a registration renewal in Arizona?
Renewing a typical Arizona car worth about $18,000 runs roughly $163.05 a year. Part of that is value-based, so the amount falls as the vehicle depreciates.
What does it cost to register an electric vehicle in Arizona?
A new $45,000 EV comes to about $3,739.50 to register in Arizona. Arizona does not currently add a separate annual EV surcharge, which is increasingly unusual.
Is any of my Arizona registration tax-deductible?
Yes β the value-based portion (Vehicle License Tax (VLT)) is generally deductible on a federal return because it is assessed on the vehicle's value rather than as a flat charge. Flat registration fees are not. The calculator flags the deductible lines automatically.
