Colorado Specific Ownership Tax

Colorado charges a specific ownership tax in place of a local property tax on vehicles. It is the largest and most variable part of a Colorado registration, and it falls steeply — from 2.1% of taxable value in the first year to a flat three dollars once the vehicle turns ten.

The rate schedule

Taxable value is 85% of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. The rate applied to it steps down by year: 2.1% in year one, 1.5% in year two, 1.2% in year three, 0.9% in year four, then 0.45% from years five through nine. From the tenth year the tax becomes a flat $3 regardless of the vehicle’s value.

The cliff at year ten

That final step is dramatic. A vehicle paying 0.45% of an $30,000 taxable value is contributing about $135 a year; the following year it pays $3. Colorado is consequently one of the cheapest places in the country to keep an older vehicle registered.

What else is on the bill

Alongside the ownership tax you pay a road safety surcharge and a bridge safety surcharge, both scaled by vehicle weight — about $19.30 and $18 respectively for a typical car — plus county fees and, from July 2026, a vehicle age fee of $7 to $12. Plug-in hybrids pay a $63.05 road usage fee.

Late registration is punished by the month

Colorado charges $25 for each month a registration is late, capped at $100, and applies it strictly. Because the penalty is flat rather than proportional, it hits inexpensive vehicles hardest in relative terms.
